Woodpeckers Are.
North America's Woodpecker Problem.
There are over 20 species of woodpecker in North America, and they are found in virtually every region from southern Canada to Mexico. While woodpeckers are a protected species under the Migratory Birds Convention Act in Canada and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the US, that doesn't mean you have to accept damage to your property.
The species most commonly responsible for building damage include the Northern Flicker, the Pileated Woodpecker, the Downy Woodpecker, and the Hairy Woodpecker. All of these species are found throughout the range where EIFS and stucco construction is common.

The most common culprit for building damage. Northern Flickers are ground feeders that also excavate nest cavities in buildings.
Pileated Woodpecker
Eastern & Western forests
The largest North American woodpecker. Pileated damage is dramatic — large, rectangular holes that cause serious structural damage.
Downy Woodpecker
Across North America
The smallest and most common woodpecker. Downy damage tends to be smaller but can be widespread across a building facade.
Hairy Woodpecker
Across North America
Similar to the Downy but larger. Hairy Woodpeckers are strong excavators capable of significant damage to EIFS cladding.
